What is the strangest hot Hatch you can find? This Citroen CX GTI may not appear to be a hatch, but the rear section opens like a hatchback. Also, the crazy frenchness of the rear wheels being closer together and the single spoke steering wheel give it strange points. Happy hunting!

Oh, that’s a good one. Not sure if weirder though. Pretty close to the CX but not quite past.

Incidentally the CX never had a hatch. The only CXs with hatches were aftermarket conversions.

Kinja'd!!!

The smaller but similar looking GS on the other hand did get a factory hatch when it was facelifted to become the GSA in 1979.

Must have confused it with the GSA. Which was far less hot than any CX.

I specified the GTI version (but the pics aren’t gti I don’t think, didn’t feel like spending 10 mins finding correct pics.) The regular one isn’t really a hot hatch though

It was a lift back, same thing.

You didn’t specify the GTI version either.

Crap, thanks. I had in original version but then my browser crashed and I lost my work and forgot to re-add it.

No not at all. Just a Fastback sedan. If only the bottom part of the rear opens, its a fastback.

Factory CX:

Kinja'd!!!

Only the bottom part opens.

Liftback:

Kinja'd!!!

Rear window opens as well.

Hatchback:

Kinja'd!!!

Entire thing opens. Bit steeper and more wagon-y than the liftback.

Well, styling, the CX is much more odd.

But I’m not sure you can stranger than putting an engine where the back seats used to be and then selling that car to the public.

As mentioned, the CX doesn’t quite count as a hatch, but its smaller five-door sibling, the BX, would be an excellent candidate: it was longer than a stereotypical hatchback, with a very generous luggage area, and comfortable seating for four adults, yet weighed under a ton, and in 16v GTI form, came with a hilariously highly-strung rally-bred four-pot that revved to 7000RPM and would propel it to 60mph in under 7 seconds. It still had Citroën’s trick hydropneumatic suspension too, which actually led to a fantastic ride-handling compromise: it drives like a hot-hatch, but rides like a luxury car.

To cap things off, it was styled by Marcello Gandini, better known for his work on the Lamborghini Countach, and while it’s certainly not as outlandish as that, it still displays a fair bit of oddball flair.

This is key. If lift =hatch, my 300ZX is quite the hot hatch

Thanks! I’m a Citroën fan (as you may have guessed by my avatar) – I used to own a Xantia, and my parents have a pair of BXes, one of which is a 16v, that I’ve driven quite a bit. They got a whole lot less crazy after Peugeot bought them (the CX was the last ‘pure’ Citroën), but they’ve still carried a bit of that off-the-wall approach with them.

Kinja'd!!! Connqr > twochevrons

Yeah, I never would have guessed. How much rust did they have? That’s always been the #1 problem.

Ours were never too bad, but that’s in New Zealand, where they don’t salt the roads. By the time the 16v came out in the late ‘80s, I think they’d upped their rustproofing game a bit, but seeing how thin some of that sheet metal is, I can’t image they’re terribly durable anyway. After all, it’s a four door car that weighs under a ton, and although ‘simplify and add lightness’ is a great maxim, I think that they paid more attention to the second half of that catchphrase than the first.

Having said that, despite the complexity of the hydraulic system, they’re actually pretty reliable. My parents’ 16v has 320,000km on it, which I think is pretty good for an ‘80s French hatch with an engine that demands to be revved, and has obviously been driven hard all its life.
